Sad News about “Yellow”

Yesterday the juvenile female peregrine from Pitt nicknamed “Yellow” was found dead at Allegheny Center on the North Side with a broken neck.  She apparently hit a building.

Yellow had a hard, short life.  On June 24 she was rescued from the Webster Hall chimney where she was trapped and dehydrated.  Yellow spent many weeks in rehab and was in good condition when she was released late last month.  Alas, she didn’t make it.  The Fates were against her.

  1. Who is left?
At the University of Pittsburgh, Dorothy and E2 fledged 5 youngsters and have 3 survivors: two males (red and white tape) and a female (blue tape).

At Gulf Tower, Dori and Louie fledged 5 youngsters and have 4 survivors: 3 males (green, red and yellow tape) and one female (White, who was rehabbed and released).

The tape colors on the USFW bands are arbitrary. Their purpose is to help observers identify the birds during the fledging phase.

  2. Always so sad but they probably have better chances here than on a cliff. We just have to hope next year is kinder to them.

  3. So sorry everyone. This is the hard part.
I’d like to thank the team at the Rehab Facility for the support and good care given to Yellow and White from Gulf. Yellow was trained to catch food by the volunteers who lobbed chunks of meat into the air for her to catch. A special nod of thanks to the dedicated volunteers.

  4. Perhaps you could call the COL fledge group the “flag” group? (Red, white and blue bands.) Now I have to cudgel my memory for a flag for the Gulf group–green, red, yellow and white? The “Brazil” group, maybe? Maybe not.

  5. How terriby sad. I’ve been out of town for a couple of weeks, and was looking forward to updates about her progress. It has been a remarkable year, with a bumper crop of babies, and I know it’s unrealistic to expect happy endings for all of them. Still, it’s heart breaking to hear that we’ve lost another.
