Watch out below! This green heron is zooming in for a landing!
We normally see green herons from above and they look both green and chunky.
This bird is likely a juvenile and from “straight on” he doesn’t look like a green heron at all. Notice his foreshortened beak and big crest, his striped brown neck. Wow, he’s thin!

I had a California scrub jay visitor who flew to take peanuts from my hand. One summer he molted and hid in the tree while his partner would get the peanuts left on the railing. Since then, I still see scrub jays come in twos but the one I’m guessing is the male is much shier than the jay that took peanuts from my hand so I wonder if the molt changed his behavior.
