Bet it’s busy guarding the wild rose hips from Robins and Bluebirds…they can have a major attitude chasing other birds and dogs too, if in their space…one did that to our Lady dog…flew down on her back…we were both surprised…
I nicknamed the one here “The Tyrant”…Have not had to fill the suet feeders for a month since the Tyrant showed up!! He roosts in a falsecypress just outside the door…
Hope he moves on soon! I miss the other birds!
Hi Kate – Thanks for posting this. That was a frigid day at the Volant Strips. We were waiting for the short-eared owls to show up with some good light, but that didn’t happen. Enjoyed shooting this very cooperative mockingbird while we waited. Got some decent light on him as well.

I had to do a double-take with the picture: the bud behind the bird’s head made it appear to have a small but distinct crest.
I had hoped to see the eagles at the nest site in Hays but saw a mockingbid instead.
