This week I found several roses in bloom in my neighborhood.
Roses blooming at the end of December? In Pittsburgh?
Last month there were only two nights below freezing at the airport (Dec 18-20, 29 to 30oF), but it probably didn’t drop below freezing in my city neighborhood. This coming Monday night, January 4, the low is predicted to be 12oF.
That’s what a crazy winter it’s been!

Hey Kate,
I think that’s one of my roses…crazy winter so far.
Donna, it is one of your roses if you live on Winterburn. 🙂
Yep…that would be mine.
🙂
Meanwhile it was likely (there’s not a weather station right there) above freezing at the North Pole earlier this week. That would be about 50°F above normal!
I discovered a forsythia blooming in my backyard the other day. This from some branches we stuck in the ground over the summer to try and start a new hedge. We tried that last year, but they didn’t survive the winter. Maybe this winter will help our efforts in this regard.
I have seen buttercups blooming in my yard this week, and my hydrangea bushes are starting to leaf out. Although the water in the bird bath has frozen on multiple nights.
A little more global warming, and you’ll be holding the Rose Parade in Pittsburgh.
