Nesting season is over but it’s nice to look back at this mother great horned owl and her nestling. Today is their special day.
August 4 is International Owl Awareness Day, an annual celebration of owls. To get you in the mood, here’s a quick video that promoted last year’s event at the Oregon Zoo in Portland.
And here are some of today’s worldwide International Owl Awareness events:
- North Carolina, USA, at the NC Aquarium
- Texas, USA, at the Texas State Aquarium
- Gloucester, UK, at Birdland and Jurassic Journey
- Northern Ireland, UK, at Carnfunnock Country Park
- New Jersey, USA, at Tenafly Nature Center
- Utah, USA, at Tracy Aviary
Whooooo knew! 🙂

Oddly enough, soon after I saw this post, large bird hit our porch window. I went outside to check – not bothering to look out the window first. My kids looked out as I left the porch and said “it’s an owl!” In amazement. The bushes hid it from my view but kids said “it sprinted that way!” And I saw no trace of it anywhere. Hoping it’s ok and thinking it flew off. They insist it was a great horned owl and I am kicking myself for not looking out that window before I walked out to try and help. I assumed it was a song bird!
