Only a dozen years ago we saw many roseate spoonbills at Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island. In the evenings, roosting spoonbills decorated the trees like huge pink Christmas balls. Over the years they have drastically dwindled in number. This year we saw less than ten. The spoonbills are not the only ones. At Sanibel, bird numbers are plummeting across the board. It is alarming.
