Join me on a bird and nature walk in Schenley Park next Sunday, July 30, 8:30am to 10:30am.
Meet at the Westinghouse Memorial pond and we’ll walk Serpentine Drive or the nearby Falloon Trail keeping our eyes open for birds, plants and animals. The memorial pond is especially pretty in July with pickerel weed (Pontederia cordata) in bloom.
Dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring binoculars and field guides if you have them.
Before you come, visit my Events page in case there are changes or cancellations. Note: The outing will be canceled if there’s lightning!

I heard the night insects come last night. I enjoy sitting outside in the evening and watching the night gather in. Last night I heard an odd sound, brrr, brrr, that I couldn’t identify. I finally decided it was a frog in the pond at the farm down the hill.
Wrong. That tiny brrr, brrr, was answered and joined by others, until the whole darkness was full of a thousand little voices all raised in raucous chorus. They weren’t here yesterday.
I watch the Washington DC eaglet cam quite a bit. I know exactly what you are saying Peggy. Suddenly the night is alive with noise. It happened within one or two nights. I have no idea what it/they are.
Kate, any suggestions?
Karen & Peggy, we don’t have those bugs in the city so I haven’t heard them. I can’t guess.
Might be dog-day cicadas. They’ve started up in the last week.
