What a difference a day makes

Fall leaves and sky in Oakland (photo by Kate)No gray skies today!  I took this picture at lunch time.

With good weather today and a cold front coming tomorrow, the birds are quite active:  large flocks of grackles in Schenley Park, blue jays flying south, a red-tailed hawk hunting near Central Catholic High School (steeple in picture), and a peregrine falcon perched at the top of University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning.

  1. Kate,
I always read your posts on the PA BIRDS list as I live in Pittsburgh as well. I’ve added your blog to my favorites and look forward reading it daily. Thanks so much.

  2. Hi, Kate.

Isn’t mid-November late in the season for peregrines? I thought that, per their name, they peringrinated to warmer climes for the winter.

    Congrats on the blog.

  3. The peregrines at University of Pittsburgh don’t need to migrate because they have enough to eat here all winter (pigeons). Also, if they migrated they could lose their territory and it would be hard to win it back. I’ll write more about peregrines in the days ahead.
