On Throw Back Thursday (TBT) …
Brrrr! It’s zero degrees F (-18 C) at 8:00am this morning with a wind chill of -16 F (-27 C). Bundle up!
What about the birds? How do they cope with cold?
In January 2008 I wrote about their #1 strategy –> Coping With Cold: Food.
In the old article you’ll notice it wasn’t even as cold on January 4, 2008 as it is this morning. Last winter’s Polar Vortex changed my definition of “cold.”

Was wondering if Marcy would mind sharing her suet recipe.
I have had a Nashville Warbler visiting my suet feeders (aka bird crack) for several months. In bad weather, I put some on the ground for the Juncos and Sparrows. ALL BIRDS eat this.
1 lb lard melted can be hot, 1 lb chunky peanut butter, 4 C Old Fashioned Oats, 4 C corn meal, 1 or 2 C flour.
I make 2 batches (easier to stir that way) and fill a 9×13 cake pan.
I make multiple batches and put them in any container I can pop it out of.
